Make Custom Envelopes

Hi this is Maria. Today we’re making custom envelopes for our cards with matching Designer Series Paper. I’ll show you a triangle flap as well as a rectangle flap type envelope. We’ll be learning how to measure any card in order to be able to make an envelope for any size card. The principles are the same.

Instructions for a Triangle Flap Envelope:

  1. Measure your card from corner to corner. Add 1 inch.
  2. Take that measurement and cut your paper into a square.
  3. For my 4 ¼ x 5 ½ card, the diagonal was 7 in. So we cut an 8 in square.
  4. Place the square in a diamond formation on the table.
  5. Place the card in the center.
  6. Fold the sides into the center, and close to the card edge.
  7. Try to keep the corners aligned before pressing down.
  8. Repeat step 6-7 for the top and bottom.
  9. When you fold up the bottom piece, fold the corner to make it level with the side pieces.
  10. Place the card inside the envelope before sealing to ensure an easy fit.
  11. Use Tear & Tape to secure the bottom piece up to the side pieces.
  12. That’s it! You’ve made a beautiful envelope!

Instructions for a Rectangle Flap Envelope:

  1. Measure your card’s width. Add 1 ¼ inches.
  2. For my 4 ¼ x 5 ½ card, the width was 5 ½ in. So we cut the first side to 6 ¾ in.
  3. Determine the size of your flap. I decided on 2 inches.
  4. The height of this card is 4 ¼ in. Double this makes 8 ½ in, and add the 2 in flap. So we cut the side at 10 ½ in.
  5. Score ½ in from the long side. Score both sides.
  6. Decide which side is the top. Score 2 in from the top.
  7. Rotate the paper. Score at 4 in. This leaves a ¼ in finger grip when folded.
  8. Burnish all folded edges.
  9. Cut the lower side rectangles and top rectangles away.
  10. Miter the corners on the bottom piece, side tabs, and top.
  11. Place the card inside the envelope before sealing to ensure an easy fit.
  12. Use Tear & Tape to secure the bottom piece up to the side pieces.
  13. That’s it! You’ve made a beautiful envelope!
